What is the history of Valentine’s Day?

The origins of Valentine’s Day goes all the way back to 270 A.D, in the midst of Emperor Claudius Gothicus’ reign. Emperor Claudius decided that soldiers who weren’t married or in a relationship fought better than those who had wives and girlfriends back home, so he banned marriage. Priest Valentine was arrested and imprisoned after he was caught marrying Christian couples in secret. Helping Christians at this time was considered a crime, but Claudius took a liking to Priest Valentine and didn’t execute him straight away. Being deeply religious, Priest Valentine attempted to convert Emperor Claudius and he was condemned to death. The night before his execution, he left a note signed “from your Valentine”. Hence, the beginning of proposing on Valentine’s Day becoming a tradition!

5 Proposal Ideas for Valentine’s Day

1. Use the classic ‘bed of roses’ trick

If you and your beau love clichés, then why not go for the classic ‘roses everywhere’ proposal? Whether you choose to get a hotel room with a trail of roses leading to the bed, or have rose petals everywhere at home, it is certain to be romantic.

Choose to go full The Notebook style and sprinkle the rose petals around the house whilst your other half is asleep or wait until they come home – either way, it’s a colourful and fun way to set the scene. Once your partner gets to the end of the trail, you’ll be ready and waiting with a diamond engagement ring. It’s also one of the best ways to make the most of a hotel if a hotel room proposal is what you’re after!

2. Opt for a destination proposal

A destination proposal is a wonderful experience, but takes some planning and preparation – especially if you’re doing it for Valentine’s Day. If you’re a couple who frequently go on romantic getaways, then a destination Valentine’s Day proposal will make it a truly memorable one.

If you and your partner don’t usually embark on holidays or city breaks then a romantic trip will hide your intentions, making it a wonderful surprise. From a beach proposal to a proposal in the city, it’s a great way to get down on one knee and present that sparkling diamond.

3. Propose over brunch or a picnic

If you want to leave your proposal until the evening of Valentine’s Day, that’s entirely up to you. However, a lot of Valentine’s Day proposals take place in the evening, so why not consider proposing over Brunch or during a romantic picnic in the park? But don’t forget to wrap up warm!

Both brunch and a picnic are fairly inexpensive ways to pop the question (especially when you compare it to a three-course meal at a fine dining restaurant!) so, get your diamond ring and picnic blanket at the ready.

4. Propose in a different language

Love is romantic in many different languages, so why not mix it up and get your Duolingo on. Whether you choose to say this out loud or write ‘I Love You’ and/or ‘Will You Marry Me’ on every page in a small book, write “will you marry me?” leading up to the question in your partner’s native language. Check out some of these examples:

  • Spanish: Te Casas Conmigo?
  • Japanese: “watashito kekkon shite kuremasuka? “
  • Finnish: Haluatko naida minut?
  • German: Willst Du mich heiraten?
  • Italian: lo sposerete?
  • French: Veux-tu m’épouser?

5. Book a surprise jeweller’s appointment

On Valentine’s Day itself, why not make lunch reservations with your other half and then browse the shops? Before you do this, visit your preferred jewellers where you’re going to purchase your diamond engagement ring and ensure a selection of rings are reserved that you think your partner will like.

After lunch, whilst you’re browsing shops, go into the jewellery shop under the guise that you’re just having a look and then sit your partner down. Present the selection of engagement rings, ask your beau to choose one and then ask them to marry you!
