Diamond Certificates

What is diamond certification?

A diamond certificate - or diamond certification - is issued by an unbiased certification authority after professionally examining a diamond's external and internal characteristics. The diamond certificate certifies the diamond carat, the diamond colour and the diamond clarity. Diamond cut grades are also included for Round Brilliant cut diamonds. Diamond certificates also help establish a diamond's market value.

Shining Diamonds give customers a variety of certification options when buying their diamond jewellery. All our diamonds are graded by one of the following bodies: GIA, IGI, WGI or GIA qualified professionals (sold as Shining Diamonds Certificate).

Shining Diamond Certificate

Shining Diamonds certificates are independently certified by GIA qualified professionals. These are not in-house employed diamond graders. We use external GIA qualified professionals to certify the diamonds and create a diamond certificate only on the recommended characteristics.

GIA Diamond Certificate

GIA stands for Gemological Institute of America Inc. It is the most respected diamond certification authority and has stringent quality checks. A GIA certificate is the most recognised. When buying your diamond jewellery, such as engagement rings, Shining Diamonds recommend buying it with a GIA certificate. However, due to high fees charged by GIA for a diamond certificate, the cost for GIA certified diamond jewellery is comparatively higher.

IGI Diamond Certificate

IGI stands for International Gemological Institute. It is the largest organisation of its kind, with offices all over the world, including New York and Hong Kong. IGI grade diamonds, gemstones and fine jewellery against a strict international system.

GIA Laboratory-Grown Diamond Report

Since October 2020, GIA introduced their redesigned Laboratory-Grown Diamond Report in a new digital-only format. The report provides a full assessment of the 4C’s and is “laser-inscribed with the GIA report number and the words ‘LABORATORY-GROWN’ to ensure that consumers can clearly differentiate the product and fully understand their purchase.” The report also states whether the stone was created by either the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) or high pressure, high temperature (HPHT) method.
