Guide to yellow diamond jewellery
When most people picture a diamond, they imagine a classic colourless gem. But diamonds actually come in all sorts of colours. Yellow is just one shade that has become increasingly popular in recent years. If you're looking for a piece of jewellery that feels a little more unique than a classic diamond, a yellow diamond might be the perfect choice.
What is a yellow diamond?
Diamonds appear yellow when traces of nitrogen become trapped in the carbon structure as the diamond forms. While faint yellow diamonds are fairly common, bright, intensely coloured diamonds are much rarer and more valuable.
What is a yellow diamond called?
Yellow diamonds are commonly referred to simply as yellow diamonds or fancy yellow diamonds. However, bright yellow diamonds that are deeply saturated are known as canary diamonds, although this is not an official grading term.
How are yellow diamonds graded?
Colourless diamonds are measured on a scale from D to Z, with D being colourless and Z being yellow-tinted. Officially graded yellow diamonds are darker and more saturated than a Z-rated diamond. The grades include:
-
Fancy Light
-
Fancy
-
Fancy Intense
-
Fancy Deep
-
Fancy Vivid
While colourless diamonds become less valuable the more yellow they are, fancy yellow diamonds actually become more valuable the more intense their colour is.
What colour setting goes best with yellow diamonds?
The choice of metal colour comes down to personal preference. However, the most popular option is yellow gold, as the setting enhances the diamond's colour saturation and complements the stone's warm undertones. Rose gold is also popular for the same reason, especially if the diamond has an orange or pink secondary hue.
Natural vs treated yellow diamonds
Natural diamonds can have their colour enhanced through treatment. Natural colours are more sought after, as colour treatments can modify the hue and make the stone more sensitive to heat and other repairs. Treatments include:
-
HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature) – Produces stable colour changes and is recognised by GIA when colour grading, but only works on certain diamonds and can produce a green tinge. It also reduces resale value significantly.
-
Irradiation – Can produce more intense colours, but if used as the only colour-enhancing method, it runs the risk of fading over time. This method must also be declared when submitted for GIA grading.
-
Annealing – Can stabilise colours produced by irradiation and extend the durability of the colour treatment. GIA will still grade the stone, but the treatment must be declared.
-
Coating – The cheapest method. It wears off over time and can be damaged by ultrasonic cleaning. GIA will not grade coated gems.
