How to clean gold jewellery

How to clean gold jewellery

Sometimes your favourite gold jewellery pieces can lose lustre over time. This could be due to different perfumes, oils and lotions which jewellery is exposed to on a daily basis – or it could be down to naturally losing their shine over time.

Occasionally, gold jewellery can also tarnish due to oxidisation – this occurs in gold pieces which have been mixed with other metals. Luckily, with our helpful guide you can restore your favourite gold jewellery back to its original sparkle.

With our few simple steps, you can get your gold jewellery to glow again. This simple method will give your jewellery a new lease of life – although, be careful when cleaning engagement rings with diamonds, as you will need to take extra care due to their illustrious sparkle.

What you’ll need

•             Soft bristled brush

•             Microfibre cloth

•             Warm water

Step 1

Firstly, mix your mild detergent into lukewarm water. You can use anything such as baby shampoo or a soft hand soap. However, it’s important to be really mindful about the temperature of the water you are using, as hot water could potentially tarnish your gold jewellery in the long term.

Step 2

After this, we recommend soaking your gold jewellery for approximately 10 minutes – as this will allow for a thorough clean.

Step 3

Following the jewellery soak, it is then time to start gently brushing your piece with a soft bristled brush. This could be a soft toothbrush – as this can be used to easily get in between the crevices of the piece.

Step 4

The final stage of cleaning is drying with cloth. The use of microfibre cloth is especially important as it prevents you from getting the fibres stuck into the crannies of your freshly cleaned jewellery.

This method serves as a good rule of thumb for cleaning most gold jewellery. However, if you are cleaning more delicate pieces such as diamond earrings, there might be some extra steps you need to take – so read our above guide carefully.
