The history of the wedding ring goes back to Roman times when the use of metal rings became popular. Before that, grass was tied around hands and waists to symbolise the union of souls. Gradually the popularity grew and so did the intricate design of rings. The first engagement ring for instance, in 1477, feature small diamonds on a gold ring shaped into an ‘M’ to denote the King of Austria, his name being Maximilian.
